Nauru

Oceania · Micronesia
CapitalYaren

Nauru is a tiny raised coral island in the central Pacific and one of the world's smallest independent countries. A narrow inhabited coastal plain surrounds a higher central plateau known as Topside. Much of this interior was transformed by more than a century of phosphate mining, leaving a striking landscape of exposed limestone pinnacles and abandoned extraction areas. Remaining vegetation is concentrated around the coast and less-disturbed parts of the plateau, while Buada Lagoon, a small landlocked freshwater lagoon, provides a contrasting patch of greener habitat. Nauru has a hot tropical climate with highly variable rainfall and periodic droughts. There are no rivers, and freshwater availability is limited.

Nauru has a small avifauna, but one species makes it particularly distinctive: the Nauru Reed Warbler, found nowhere else in the world. It occurs in remaining scrub, woodland and regenerating vegetation across the island, including areas affected by former phosphate mining. Otherwise, birding focuses largely on seabirds and migratory shorebirds, with White Tern, Brown Noddy, frigatebirds and boobies occurring around the coast and Pacific Golden Plover, Wandering Tattler and Ruddy Turnstone among regular migrants. Nauru has virtually no dedicated birding-tourism infrastructure, but its extremely small size means most accessible habitats can be explored without long journeys. For specialist birders, the main reason to visit is clearly the endemic reed warbler, making Nauru a short but potentially important stop on a wider Micronesian or central Pacific trip.
