Birding Compass is designed to use as little personal data as possible. There are no user accounts, uploaded life lists are not permanently stored, and Birding Compass does not use advertising or marketing trackers.
Who is responsible?
Birding Compass is an independent project operated by:

For data-protection purposes, Friedrich Striggow is the data controller.
Life list uploads
You can optionally upload an eBird life list to personalize rankings and target-species information.
Your CSV is processed temporarily by the Birding Compass backend, which is deployed in Railway's Amsterdam region. Only the species information needed to calculate your results is retained. Observation dates, locations, counts and other checklist details are discarded after processing, and the original file is not permanently stored.
The processed life list is kept temporarily in server memory and associated with your browser through a necessary session cookie containing a random identifier. You can remove your life list at any time. It is also removed after the session expires or earlier if the server is restarted or redeployed.
This processing is necessary to provide the personalized functionality you request when uploading a life list.
Feedback and contact
If you submit feedback, Birding Compass processes your feedback category, message and, if you provide it, your email address. Your email address is optional and is used only if a reply is appropriate.
Feedback is delivered using Resend and may be processed in the United States under applicable international data-transfer safeguards. Feedback emails are normally deleted within 12 months, unless they need to be retained longer for an ongoing conversation or issue.
Please do not submit sensitive personal information through the feedback form.
Hosting, security and analytics
Birding Compass uses Railway for backend hosting and Cloudflare for network, security and analytics services. These providers may process limited technical information, such as IP addresses and request information, as necessary to deliver and protect the website.
Cloudflare Web Analytics is used for basic traffic and performance statistics. It does not use analytics cookies or local storage and is not used for advertising or individual user profiling.
Although the Birding Compass backend is deployed in Railway's Amsterdam region, Railway and other service providers may process data outside the European Economic Area. Where required, applicable safeguards for international data transfers are used.
Your rights
Under the GDPR, you may have rights to access, correct or delete your personal data, restrict or object to processing, and exercise data portability where applicable.
To exercise your rights or ask a privacy question, contact contact@birdingcompass.com.
You may also lodge a complaint with a data-protection authority. In Spain, the supervisory authority is the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (AEPD).
Changes
This information may be updated if Birding Compass changes how data is processed or the services used to operate the website. The date above shows the latest revision.
