Macao is a small Special Administrative Region of China on the Pearl River estuary, immediately west of Hong Kong. It consists of the Macao Peninsula and the formerly separate islands of Taipa and Coloane, now connected by extensive land reclamation. The territory is intensely urbanised and among the world's most densely populated places, leaving relatively little natural habitat. Coloane retains the largest areas of wooded hills, while reservoirs, small wetlands, mangroves and tidal shores provide additional green space. Macao has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, rainy summers and mild, drier winters influenced by the East Asian monsoon. Its landscape is particularly notable for the contrast between dense high-rise development and the remaining coastal and hillside habitats.

Macao's birding is centred on migrants and coastal wetland species rather than endemics. The most important area is the Cotai Ecological Zone, whose mangroves and intertidal habitats attract herons, egrets, ducks and shorebirds, including the globally threatened Black-faced Spoonbill in winter. Wooded hills and reservoirs on Coloane provide habitat for common southern Chinese forest birds and passage migrants, while the Pearl River estuary places Macao on an important East Asian migration route. Birding tourism is minimal, but the territory's tiny size and excellent transport make the main sites easy to reach independently. Macao is therefore most worthwhile as a compact wetland and migration stop, particularly when combined with the much broader birding opportunities of nearby Hong Kong and southern China.
