Guinea
Guinea combines a humid Atlantic coast with the rugged Fouta Djallon highlands, broad savannas and some of West Africa’s richest remaining forests in the southeast. The Fouta Djallon is a major regional watershed, giving rise to the Niger, Senegal and Gambia rivers. Southeastern Guinée Forestière forms part of the Upper Guinea forest zone and includes the biologically exceptional Mount Nimba massif.
Overview
Guinea is particularly important for Upper Guinea forest and West African highland birds. The Mount Nimba region holds restricted-range species including Nimba Flycatcher and Yellow-bearded Greenbul, while southeastern forests support hornbills, turacos, greenbuls and other rainforest specialists. The Fouta Djallon offers contrasting escarpment, woodland and grassland birding, and Guinea’s wetlands and savannas broaden the species mix considerably. Despite its biological importance, Guinea remains a challenging and little-developed birding destination. Specialist guides and tourism infrastructure are limited, roads to remote sites can be poor—especially during the rainy season—and visiting key forest and mountain areas may require substantial logistical planning.
