Republic of the Congo
The Republic of the Congo stretches from the Atlantic coast deep into the Congo Basin, with tropical rainforest covering most of the country. Northern Congo contains vast, sparsely populated lowland forests and extensive swamp forests associated with the Congo and Sangha river systems. Farther south, rainforest gives way to mosaics of wooded savanna, grassland and forest, while the short Atlantic coastline includes lagoons, mangroves and sandy beaches. Much of the interior remains relatively intact and difficult to access, making the country important for the conservation of Central Africa's large rainforest ecosystems.
Overview
The Republic of the Congo offers exceptional Congo Basin forest birding, particularly in its remote northern forests. Odzala-Kokoua National Park is the best-known wildlife destination, with rainforest and natural forest clearings supporting Black-casqued Hornbill, Great Blue Turaco, African Grey Parrot, forest kingfishers, barbets and numerous understory specialists. The country's forests also provide opportunities for localized and poorly known Central African species, while southern savannas add a contrasting open-country avifauna. Birding can be combined with searches for western lowland gorillas and forest elephants, especially around established conservation areas. Specialist birding tourism remains limited, however, and dense forest, difficult roads and long distances make independent travel challenging. Remote areas may require 4WD transport, boats and organized local logistics, with experienced guides particularly useful for locating secretive forest species.
