Ukraine
Ukraine is one of Europe's largest countries, dominated by broad plains, fertile steppe and major river systems. The Carpathian Mountains rise in the west, with extensive forests and upland meadows, while the south and east contain open grasslands, agricultural steppe and wetlands associated with the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. The Dnipro, Dniester and Danube form important river corridors, with extensive floodplains, reservoirs and coastal lagoons. Climate is predominantly continental, with colder winters in the north and east and warmer, drier conditions towards the Black Sea coast.
Overview
Ukraine has exceptional potential for steppe, wetland and eastern European birds. The Danube Delta and Black Sea wetlands support pelicans, herons, Pygmy Cormorants and large concentrations of migrating waterbirds, while surviving steppe habitats hold Demoiselle Crane, Pallid Harrier and various larks and buntings. The Carpathians add Ural Owl, Hazel Grouse and several woodpeckers. However, Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine makes birding tourism highly problematic: many important areas are unsafe, inaccessible, occupied or affected by mines and military activity. Conditions vary geographically and can change rapidly, so official travel advice must take priority. Ukraine's birdlife remains highly significant, but conventional birding trips are currently severely constrained.
