Somalia
Somalia occupies the Horn of Africa, with Africa’s longest mainland coastline stretching along the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean. Much of the country consists of arid scrub, grassland and semi-desert, crossed by seasonal rivers and dry valleys. The north, including Somaliland, is more mountainous, with the Golis Mountains rising sharply above the Gulf of Aden coastal plain and supporting juniper woodland and other highland habitats. Southern Somalia is generally flatter and includes the permanent Juba and Shabelle rivers, with floodplains, woodland and agricultural areas. The climate is predominantly hot and dry, with highly variable seasonal rainfall and frequent droughts.
Overview
Somalia is one of Africa’s most distinctive but least accessible birding regions, with numerous Horn of Africa endemics and near-endemics. Northern Somalia and Somaliland are especially important for species such as Somali Pigeon, Somali Thrush, Warsangli Linnet, Archer’s Buzzard and Somali Golden-winged Grosbeak, while arid lowlands support Somali Lark, Somali Wheatear, Little Brown Bustard and various coursers and sandgrouse. Southern habitats contain a different East African assemblage and remain particularly poorly surveyed. Somaliland has historically been more accessible to visiting birders than southern and central Somalia, and specialist expeditions have targeted its endemics, but security arrangements and local guidance are essential. Somalia as a whole faces serious risks from armed conflict, terrorism, kidnapping and weak infrastructure, and travel advice commonly warns against visiting much or all of the region.
