Serbia
Serbia lies at the meeting point of Central and Southeastern Europe, with the flat Pannonian Plain dominating the north and increasingly hilly and mountainous landscapes towards the south. The Danube, Sava and Tisza form extensive river corridors with floodplain forests, wetlands and agricultural lowlands. Central and southern Serbia contain forested hills, limestone gorges and mountain ranges, while the Đerdap Gorge cuts dramatically through the Carpathians along the Danube. The climate is mainly continental, with hot summers and cold winters, moderated locally by elevation and river valleys.
Overview
Serbia offers particularly good wetland, raptor and southeastern European birding. Northern wetlands and fishponds support Pygmy Cormorant, Ferruginous Duck, herons and large numbers of migrating waterbirds, while the Deliblato Sands combine steppe, woodland and sandy habitats. The Uvac Gorge is famous for its major colony of Griffon Vultures, one of Serbia's conservation successes. Forests and mountain areas add Ural Owl, Black Woodpecker and Golden Eagle, while open agricultural landscapes support European Roller, Red-footed Falcon and Eastern Imperial Eagle. Birding tourism is modest but growing, and most major sites are accessible by road. Serbia is particularly rewarding for combining Danube wetlands, Pannonian species and Balkan mountain birds without extensive travel.
