Luxembourg
Luxembourg is a small Western European country divided between two contrasting landscapes. The northern Oesling, part of the Ardennes, is characterised by forested hills, narrow valleys and rocky river gorges, while the southern Gutland has gentler terrain with farmland, woodland and more densely settled areas. Along the eastern border, the Moselle Valley has a milder microclimate and vineyard-covered slopes. Forests cover more than a third of Luxembourg, complemented by grasslands, streams, reservoirs and former quarry landscapes. The country has a temperate climate with moderate rainfall throughout the year and relatively mild seasonal conditions.
Overview
Luxembourg offers a representative mix of Central European forest, farmland and wetland birds. Mature woodland is particularly productive for Black, Middle Spotted and Grey-headed Woodpeckers, as well as European Honey Buzzard and Black Stork. The forested valleys and reservoir around Upper Sûre provide some of the country's most varied birding, while the Haff Réimech wetlands in the Moselle Valley are important for breeding and migrating waterbirds. Open farmland supports species such as Red-backed Shrike and European Stonechat. Luxembourg has few specialist targets of its own, but its compact size, good roads and extensive walking network make birding straightforward. It is best suited to relaxed exploration or as an addition to a wider Benelux and Central European birding trip.
