Kuwait is a small, predominantly flat desert country at the northwestern end of the Persian Gulf. Its landscape consists mainly of gravel and sandy desert, with seasonal depressions and sparse vegetation that can become briefly green after winter rains. The coastline includes mudflats, shallow bays and tidal islands, particularly around Kuwait Bay, creating a strong contrast with the arid interior. Summers are extremely hot and dry, while winters are considerably cooler.

Kuwait's importance for birds comes primarily from its position on a major migration route between Eurasia and Africa. In spring and autumn, even small patches of vegetation can concentrate impressive numbers of warblers, flycatchers, shrikes, wheatears and other passerines crossing the desert. Jahra Pools Reserve is a key wetland for migrants and waterbirds, while Sulaibikhat Bay and surrounding tidal flats attract large numbers of shorebirds, gulls and terns. Desert areas support larks, sandgrouse and raptors, and Kuwait has recorded an unusually large species list for its size because of migrants and vagrants. Birding sites are generally accessible by road, although extreme summer heat makes the cooler migration and winter seasons much more productive and comfortable.
