Japan is a mountainous archipelago stretching for thousands of kilometres along the western Pacific, from the cool-temperate island of Hokkaido to the subtropical Ryukyu Islands. Around three-quarters of the country is mountainous, with extensive forests, volcanic ranges and short, fast-flowing rivers contrasting with densely populated coastal plains. Honshu contains the Japanese Alps and Mount Fuji, while Hokkaido has broader wetlands and boreal-influenced landscapes. Southern islands such as Okinawa and Amami support subtropical evergreen forest. Japan lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, making volcanoes, earthquakes and geothermal activity prominent features. Its long north–south extent produces strong climatic variation, including snowy northern winters and warm, humid conditions in the south.

Japan offers an exceptional combination of East Asian endemics, wintering cranes and seabirds. Hokkaido is famous for spectacular winter concentrations of Red-crowned Cranes, alongside Steller's Sea Eagles and White-tailed Eagles. The subtropical Amami and Okinawa islands hold highly restricted species including Amami Jay, Okinawa Rail and Okinawa Woodpecker, while central Japan offers Japanese Green Woodpecker, Copper Pheasant and Japanese Accentor. Karuizawa is a well-known forest-birding base, and coastal wetlands attract large numbers of migrants. Offshore islands add specialties such as Japanese Murrelet and several endemic thrushes and woodpigeons. Japan is particularly convenient for independent birding thanks to excellent public transport, roads and accommodation, although rental cars are useful for remote sites. Its combination of accessible infrastructure, distinctive island endemics and spectacular winter birding makes it one of East Asia's major birding destinations.
