Italy
Italy extends from the Alps across the Mediterranean, with the Apennine Mountains forming a long backbone through the peninsula. The fertile Po Valley dominates the north, while central and southern Italy combine mountains, rolling farmland, Mediterranean scrub, forests and extensive coastlines. Major wetlands survive around river deltas, lagoons and coastal plains. The large islands of Sicily and Sardinia add dry Mediterranean landscapes, mountains and distinctive ecosystems. Climate varies from alpine conditions in the north to increasingly warm, dry Mediterranean conditions towards the south, while Italy's position between Europe and Africa makes it an important geographical bridge across the Mediterranean.
Overview
Italy combines Alpine, Mediterranean and wetland birding with major migration routes between Europe and Africa. The Po Delta is one of the country's richest wetlands, supporting flamingos, herons, terns and large numbers of waterbirds. The Alps hold Lammergeier, Golden Eagle, Rock Ptarmigan and Wallcreeper, while the Apennines support Rock Partridge and European Honey Buzzard. Sicily and the Strait of Messina are famous for spectacular spring raptor migration, and Sardinia offers specialties including Little Bustard, Marmora's Warbler and Eleonora's Falcon. Coastal wetlands and Mediterranean scrub add further southern species. Italy has extensive tourism infrastructure and good transport, making most major birding regions straightforward to visit independently. Its strength lies in the variety of habitats and concentrated Mediterranean migration.
