Croatia
Croatia stretches from the Pannonian lowlands of Central Europe to the Adriatic Sea, with the rugged Dinaric Alps separating the interior from the coast. Inland landscapes include agricultural plains, forests, rivers and extensive wetlands along the Danube, Drava and Sava. The Adriatic region is characterised by limestone karst, Mediterranean scrub, rocky mountains and a highly fragmented coastline with more than a thousand islands and islets. Forests remain extensive in mountainous areas such as Gorski Kotar and Velebit. Croatia's climate ranges from continental inland to Mediterranean along the coast, with hot, dry summers and mild winters in the south.
Overview
Croatia combines Mediterranean, mountain and major wetland birding. The Kopački Rit wetlands near the Danube are among the country's premier sites, supporting White-tailed Eagle, Black Stork, herons, waterfowl and large numbers of migrants. The Dinaric mountains, particularly Velebit, offer Rock Partridge, Golden Eagle, Alpine Chough and other rocky-country species, while coastal scrub and islands support Eastern Subalpine Warbler, Blue Rock Thrush and Eleonora's Falcon. The Adriatic islands also provide breeding sites for Scopoli's and Yelkouan Shearwaters. Croatia has good roads, extensive tourism infrastructure and numerous protected areas, making independent birding relatively easy. Its particular strength is the ability to combine Danube wetlands with rugged Mediterranean and Dinaric habitats within one trip.
