Estonia
Estonia is the northernmost Baltic state, characterised by extensive forests, peat bogs, wetlands and a deeply indented Baltic coastline. More than 2,000 islands and islets lie offshore, with Saaremaa and Hiiumaa the largest. The generally flat landscape includes glacial lakes, coastal meadows, reedbeds and large raised bogs, while forests cover roughly half the country. Western Estonia is especially rich in shallow bays and coastal wetlands. The climate is cool temperate, with strong Baltic influence along the coast and colder, more continental conditions inland.
Overview
Estonia is one of northern Europe's best destinations for migration, wetlands and boreal forest birds. Matsalu National Park and western Estonia are internationally important staging areas for geese, ducks, swans and shorebirds, while Cape Põõsaspea is renowned for spectacular seabird and waterbird migration. Forests support Black, White-backed and Three-toed Woodpeckers, Hazel Grouse and Ural Owl, while wetlands hold Great Snipe and Common Crane. Steller's Eider is a major winter specialty along the western islands, especially Saaremaa. Estonia has a well-developed birding scene, good roads, observation towers and specialist guides, making independent travel straightforward. Its combination of intense Baltic migration and accessible northern forest birding makes spring and autumn particularly rewarding.
