Germany
Germany lies at the heart of Central Europe, with landscapes ranging from the North and Baltic Sea coasts to the Bavarian Alps. Northern Germany is dominated by lowlands, agricultural landscapes, lakes, heathlands and extensive wetlands, while the centre contains forested uplands and major river valleys. The south becomes increasingly mountainous, with the Black Forest, Bavarian Forest and Alps providing extensive woodland and alpine habitats. The Wadden Sea along the North Sea coast is one of Europe's largest intertidal ecosystems. Germany has a temperate climate, becoming more continental towards the east, and despite its high population density retains an extensive network of forests, wetlands and protected areas.
Overview
Germany offers particularly strong wetland, forest and migration birding. The Wadden Sea is internationally important for millions of migrating shorebirds, geese and ducks, while northeastern wetlands and lake districts support White-tailed Eagle, Common Crane and Great Reed Warbler. Extensive forests hold Black, Middle Spotted and Grey-headed Woodpeckers, while eastern open landscapes support Great Bustard, one of Germany's rarest breeding birds. The Heligoland archipelago is famous for concentrated migration and rarities, and the Bavarian Alps add mountain species such as Golden Eagle, Alpine Chough and Wallcreeper. Germany's excellent transport network, numerous reserves and observation infrastructure make independent birding straightforward. Its main strength is the variety of central European habitats and major migration sites accessible within a relatively compact area.
