China
China spans an extraordinary range of landscapes across East Asia, from the Tibetan Plateau and Himalayas to the deserts of Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia, temperate forests, subtropical mountains and the humid lowlands of the south. Major river systems including the Yangtze, Yellow and Mekong originate or flow through the country, while the eastern plains support most of its population and agriculture. Southwestern provinces such as Yunnan and Sichuan are exceptionally mountainous and biologically diverse, forming a transition between Himalayan, Southeast Asian and East Asian ecosystems. Climate ranges from high-altitude and desert conditions in the west to monsoonal subtropical and tropical environments in the southeast.
Overview
China is one of Asia's richest birding destinations, particularly for pheasants, cranes, parrotbills, laughingthrushes and high-altitude specialists. Sichuan is a major birding centre, with specialties such as Chinese Monal, Lady Amherst's Pheasant and Grandala, while Yunnan adds Himalayan and Southeast Asian species. The Tibetan Plateau supports Black-necked Crane, Tibetan Snowcock and numerous rosefinches, and eastern wetlands are critical for Red-crowned, Siberian and Hooded Cranes and migratory shorebirds. China also holds highly localised species such as Crested Ibis. Birding infrastructure has expanded considerably, and specialist guides and tours are available, but the country's enormous size means comprehensive trips require domestic travel. Some sensitive border and plateau regions may have permit or access restrictions, making local guides particularly useful.
