DR Congo
The Democratic Republic of the Congo occupies the heart of Central Africa and the Congo Basin, containing one of the largest expanses of tropical rainforest on Earth. The immense Congo River system drains forests, swamps and seasonally flooded landscapes across much of the country. In the east, the terrain rises dramatically into the Albertine Rift, with high mountains, volcanoes and deep lakes including Tanganyika and Kivu. Southern regions transition into woodland and savanna. Its enormous size and variation in elevation create exceptional biological diversity, but infrastructure is sparse across many remote regions.
Overview
DR Congo is one of Africa's richest and most important countries for birds, particularly for Congo Basin forest and Albertine Rift endemics. Eastern mountains around Kahuzi-Biega and the Itombwe Massif hold exceptional specialties including Congo Peafowl, Yellow-crested Helmetshrike, Rockefeller's Sunbird and Congo Bay Owl. The vast lowland forests support hornbills, turacos, pittas, forest kingfishers and numerous poorly known species, while Virunga National Park spans habitats from wetlands and savanna to montane forest. Despite extraordinary potential, DR Congo is among Africa's most difficult birding destinations. Armed conflict, insecurity, poor roads and extremely remote sites, especially in the east, severely restrict access; many important areas are currently unsuitable for conventional tourism. Specialist expeditions require experienced local organizations and careful security planning.
