Angola
Angola stretches from the Atlantic coast into the highlands and woodlands of south-central Africa. A narrow coastal plain rises sharply through an escarpment to a vast central plateau, with mountains exceeding 2,500 metres. Habitats range from arid coastal desert in the south through miombo woodland, savanna and extensive wetlands to humid forests in the north and the isolated Cabinda enclave. The Angolan Escarpment is particularly distinctive, where steep elevation and rainfall gradients create pockets of forest surrounded by drier habitats. Major rivers originating in the highlands feed both the Congo and Okavango systems.
Overview
Angola is one of Africa's most exciting destinations for localized endemic birds, particularly along the Angolan Escarpment. Key specialties include Angola Cave Chat, Braun's Bushshrike, Gabela Bushshrike, Gabela Akalat, Pulitzer's Longbill and Monteiro's Bushshrike. Mount Moco and surrounding highlands protect important remnants of Afromontane forest and species such as Swierstra's Francolin, while the southeast contains extensive miombo and Okavango-associated wetlands. Decades of limited access left Angola comparatively underexplored, and new ornithological discoveries continue to increase its appeal. Birding tourism is developing, but long distances, difficult roads and limited infrastructure at specialist sites make 4WD transport and experienced local guides highly valuable. Landmines remain a concern in some poorly marked or remote areas, so established routes should be followed.
