Afghanistan
Afghanistan is dominated by rugged mountains, high plateaus and arid valleys, with the Hindu Kush forming its central geographical backbone. Elevations range from low desert basins to peaks above 7,000 metres, creating habitats including alpine meadows, juniper woodland, dry steppe, semi-desert and river valleys. The northeast extends into the narrow Wakhan Corridor, bordered by the Pamir, Hindu Kush and Karakoram ranges. Climate is strongly continental and generally dry, with hot summers in the lowlands and severe winters at altitude.
Overview
Afghanistan lies at a fascinating meeting point of Central Asian, Himalayan and Middle Eastern bird faunas. The Hindu Kush and Wakhan support Himalayan Snowcock, Lammergeier, Golden Eagle, Wallcreeper and numerous high-altitude finches and accentors, while deserts and steppes hold sandgrouse, larks and wheatears. Wetlands such as Band-e Amir provide important breeding and migratory habitat. Afghanistan remains ornithologically underexplored, but conventional birding tourism is currently extremely difficult and dangerous because of security conditions, political restrictions and very limited tourism infrastructure. Many regions are remote and access can be unpredictable; official travel advice should take priority over any birding plans.
